Aromatherapy has been a common practice for thousands of years; ancient societies like Egypt, Greece, and China all used it. Diffusers and scented candles are two common methods to incorporate aromatherapy into a person's daily routine. However, it is crucial to take into account how these products will affect the environment given the rising concern over environmental problems. In this piece, the environmental effects of scented candles and diffusers will be compared while the production, material, and disposal of each product is examined.
Production Process
When making scented candles, wax is melted, aroma oils are added, and the resulting mixture is poured into a mold. As the wax must be heated to a high temperature and the fragrance oils must be thoroughly combined, this procedure uses a significant amount of energy. Diffusers, on the other hand, are made using a less complicated procedure. The aroma is released into the air by combining essential oils with water and placing them in a receptacle with reeds. Since this method doesn't require heat, it uses less energy than making scented candles.
Materials Used
Paraffin wax, a byproduct of crude oil, is usually used to make scented candles. This substance is both non-renewable and non-biodegradable, which means that it takes a very long time to break down. Additionally, using fossil fuels to make paraffin wax increases carbon pollution and the effects of climate change. While essential oils, which are obtained from botanicals, are used in diffusers. Even though energy is needed to produce essential oils, it is an inexhaustible resource, and the oils themselves are degradable.

Disposal
The wax and wick of a scented candle are usually discarded after it has burned down. Even though some candles are produced with natural ingredients like beeswax or soy wax, these substances are frequently blended with paraffin wax, which makes them difficult to recycle. Additionally, leftover fragrance oils shouldn't be poured down the drain because they can damage the environment. Diffusers, on the other hand, only need a refill of water and essential oils when the fragrance has worn off. The essential oils are biodegradable, and the used stalks can be composted.
Conclusion
In conclusion, diffusers are a more environmentally friendly choice even though both scented candles and diffusers have their advantages. Diffusers are produced with greater energy efficiency and with recyclable and biodegradable materials. Diffuser disposal also poses less of an environmental risk than candle waste when compared to diffusers. While using certain products for aromatherapy can help one's mental and emotional health, it's essential to think about how those products will affect the environment. We can make a small move towards a more sustainable future by choosing diffusers over scented candles.
